Beech learning blog Aut week 5

Hi Beech children and parents,

In English, the time had finally come for the children to become authors themselves. We had been reading and immersing ourselves in the story of ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’ for the best part of a month, and this week the children created their own retelling of the story. I was blown away by their enthusiasm as well as by how much of the story’s complex language they could remember and use in their own story! Excellent work children, well done – I shall enjoy reading them over the weekend.

In Maths, we have begun to explore addition and subtraction in different ways. First, we revised our number bonds to 20 before looking at applying our knowledge to problems. We then looked at the inverse relationship of addition and subtraction – this is a key skill for the children to be able to grasp at this point in the year. For example, if 12 + 8 = 20, then 20 – 12 = 8. If you want to do any extra practice at home, this would be something really useful to have a got at!

In Art this week, the children designed their own coat of arms in preparation for making their own shield designs. In Jigsaw, we began to create a Learning Charter of the rights, responsibilities, rewards and consequences that all of us share in the classroom. And in Music this week we continued to explore South African music by listening to and appraising Paul Simons’s ‘You Can Call Me Al’¬†which believe it or not, was inspired by South African township music!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Love Ms Mountjoy xx
