Sycamore Learning Blog: Spring 1, Week 1

Hello everyone and happy new year! It’s lovely to have you all back after the Christmas break. The children have done really well to come back and pick up the pace right where they left off in December – read on to find out more!

We were introduced to our new topic this week – The Cadburys. The children wrote about everything they already knew about The Cadburys and chocolate, as well as planning what they wanted to learn about this half term. We also received a few gifts this week – a large red, yellow and green flag with a black star in the middle, as well as a hard, orange, oval shaped thing. Write a comment back if you can tell what I am talking about!

We also received a letter from a designer at Cadburys, asking us to find out all about Ghana to research a new chocolate bar they are making. We wrote a letter in reply, and have since become experts on all things Ghana! The children spent the last two days making a fact file about the country. See if you can tell your mums and dads something you have learned!

We have linked this in our Geography work, by recapping our knowledge of the continents and oceans, as well as locating the UK and Ghana on a world map. We explored maps, atlases, a globe and Google Earth (a brilliant, free online resource to get the children interested in exploring the world!)

In Maths this week, we have been looking at all things to do with money. We can now identify and count all the coins and notes used in the UK, and are beginning to combine them into amounts, including ones which contain both pence and pounds. I have set some Sumdog homework for the next week which will recap what we have covered so far.

What a busy week it’s been! Just a couple of notes for parents. First, apologies for the confusion regarding the missed swimming lesson on Monday. It was as much a surprise for us as it was for the centre staff as we were waiting outside! So our first swimming lesson will now be this comingย Monday 15th January, so please remember your kits! Also, if you could please return any Homework books as soon as possible that would be great, as we can stick in the new homework sheet and curriculum letter for the half term.

Finally, a huge thank you from myself and Mrs Brown for some incredibly generous, personal and lovely presents we received before the Christmas holidays. We feel very spoiled, lucky, and happy in the knowledge that Sycamore really is the best class in the whole school! (But don’t tell anyone else…)

Have a lovely weekend, see you on Monday!

Hi Mr Hall, Iโ€™m enjoying our new topic this half term. And I found Ghana on the world map at home! It was really fun and I was faster than mummy, my little brother and daddy to spot the country. .I want to go to Ghana to learn about it!

    Dear Mr Hall,
I have liked learning about money. I like the shapes and sizes of the coins. The flag is the flag of Ghana. The orange object is a cocoa bean. See you on Monday !

Hello James! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed learning about money, hopefully you’ve had a challenge or two along the way! The flag is indeed of Ghana, and it is certainly a cocoa bean. What else have you learned this week? See you on Monday, Mr Hall ๐Ÿ™‚
